Claiming a VAT Refund on EmaraTax

A VAT refund arises when your input VAT for a period exceeds your output VAT. The return produces a credit, and you can either carry it forward or ask for it back.

Position as at August 2026

The mechanics are straightforward. Getting paid without a query is the harder part.

When a refund position actually arises

Three situations produce it repeatedly.

You are pre-revenue and spending. Fit-out, rent, professional fees and equipment all carry input VAT while you have little or no output VAT.

You export. Zero-rated supplies carry no output VAT, but you still recover input VAT on the costs behind them.

You had a large capital purchase in one period.

If your refund position has no explanation like these, check your return before you claim. An unexplained refund is usually an error, not a windfall.

Carry forward or claim back

You are not obliged to claim. The credit can sit against future periods.

Claiming makes sense when the credit is large, or when you will stay in a refund position and the balance would keep growing. Carrying forward makes sense for small balances, because a claim invites a review of the period.

That is not a reason to avoid claiming. It is a reason to have the period clean first.

What to have ready before you submit

The FTA is verifying that the input VAT you recovered was properly recoverable. Have the evidence assembled, not findable.

  1. Valid tax invoices for the material input VAT. Not statements, not payment screenshots.
  2. Import documentation where input VAT arose on imports.
  3. Proof of export for any zero-rated supplies, because that is what justifies the output VAT being nil.
  4. A reconciliation from the ledger to the boxes in the return.
  5. Bank details on the account matching your registered legal name.

Why refunds get held

Almost always one of four things.

The bank account name does not match the registered person. Input VAT claimed on blocked items, meaning entertainment or vehicles available for personal use. Invoices that do not meet the tax invoice requirements. Or a zero-rated export with no evidence of export.

Each of these is fixable before you submit and painful to fix afterwards.

Timing

Do not build a cash flow forecast around a refund date. Treat the money as arriving when it arrives, and keep the underlying period clean so there is nothing to query.

What this does not cover

Refund schemes for tourists, business visitors, new residences and mosques run under separate rules and separate forms. This article is about a registered business recovering a credit through its return.

This is general information on published law, not advice on your position.

If a claim is sitting unpaid

Send us the return, the period ledger and any FTA correspondence. Most held refunds resolve to one of the four causes above.
