Bookkeeping for Freelancers in the UAE

If you hold a freelance licence in the UAE, you are running a business for tax purposes. That has consequences most freelancers discover late.

Position as at August 2026

Here is what applies and what you actually need to do.

Corporate Tax applies to you

This surprises people. Corporate Tax is not only for companies.

An individual conducting a business or business activity in the UAE through a licence falls within the regime. Your freelance permit is a licence.

Your tax period as a natural person is the calendar year.

The two thresholds that matter

Registration is driven by turnover from your business activity. Small Business Relief sits at revenue not exceeding AED 3,000,000, under Article 21 of the Corporate Tax Law and Article 2(1) of Ministerial Decision No. 73 of 2023.

Most freelancers are comfortably inside the relief. That does not make it automatic. You must be registered, and you must elect for the relief in your tax return.

File without electing and you cannot claim it for that period.

What counts and what does not

Only income from your business activity counts toward turnover.

The FTA's own example distinguishes consulting income earned through a licence, which counts, from personal real estate investment income, which is not derived through a licence and does not.

If you have several income streams, this distinction is worth getting right rather than assuming.

VAT is a separate question

VAT registration is mandatory at AED 375,000 of taxable supplies over 12 months, and voluntary at AED 187,500.

Two taxes, two thresholds, two registrations. Being registered for one says nothing about the other.

The bookkeeping you actually need

Not a system. A discipline, and it takes an hour a month.

  1. A separate bank account for business income and expenses. This is the single highest value thing you can do and most freelancers do not.
  2. Every invoice you issue, numbered sequentially, kept.
  3. Every business expense with the receipt attached.
  4. A record of what you were paid and when.

If you do those four, your annual position takes an hour to prepare. If you do not, it takes a week and involves reconstructing a year from your personal bank statements.

The expenses freelancers get wrong

Mixing personal and business spending in one account, then estimating the split at year end. An estimate is not a record.

Claiming costs with no receipt.

Claiming things that are personal. Your own health insurance, your personal phone, your commute.

Not claiming things that are legitimate, which happens more often. Software subscriptions, professional fees, licence renewal, work equipment, and business travel are all real costs of your business.

What to do this month

Open a separate bank account. Move your business income and expenses to it.

That one change makes everything else straightforward, and it is the difference between an hour and a week when the return is due.

What this does not cover

Whether you are a resident person, and the specific turnover threshold at which a natural person must register, depend on your circumstances.

This is general information on published law, not advice on your position.
