How to Choose an Auditor in the UAE

Start with the check that voids everything else. If your auditor is not on your free zone's approved list, your free zone will not accept the report, and you will pay twice.

Position as at August 2026

Confirm that before you discuss fees.

1. Approved for your specific zone

There is no single national list that satisfies everyone.

The Ministry of Economy maintains an auditors registry. Each free zone maintains its own approved list on top of that. DMCC, DIFC, JAFZA, IFZA and DSO all publish their own.

Being registered nationally does not mean being approved by your zone. Ask for the registry number, and check it against your zone's list yourself.

2. A fee fixed in writing before work starts

Hourly billing on an audit means you find out the cost after you have lost the ability to say no.

Ask for a fixed fee, in writing, before any work begins. If a firm will not fix the fee, ask what specifically they cannot predict.

3. Who actually does the work

At smaller firms this is not always the person in the meeting.

Ask who will be on your engagement, what they will do remotely, and who signs. A partner who sells and disappears is a common pattern and it shows up in the quality of the questions you get asked.

4. Independence

Your auditor cannot audit work they did themselves.

If the same firm keeps your books, prepares your accounts and then audits them, the opinion is compromised. Some firms offer the whole package. That convenience costs you the independence the audit is supposed to provide.

Bookkeeping and audit can sit in one group, but they should not sit in one team on one client.

5. What they ask you before quoting

This tells you more than any credential.

A firm that quotes off your revenue alone is guessing. A firm that asks for your trial balance, whether your banks are reconciled, how many transactions you run and whether you have related party balances is pricing the actual work.

The second firm will give you a fee that holds. The first will come back for more.

6. Whether they will tell you something you do not want to hear

You are buying an opinion. An opinion is worth nothing from someone who will not disagree with you.

Ask what would make them qualify your report. If the answer is vague, that is your answer.

What not to choose on

Not the lowest quote. Audit fees track the mess in your books, so a quote far below the others usually means less work, not better value, and less work shows up in the opinion.

Not on the promise of speed. An audit completed suspiciously fast on unreconciled books did not examine much.

What to send when you ask for a quote

Trade licence, trial balance, prior year signed accounts, and whether your banks are reconciled to date. Any firm that can price properly will price from those four.
